Agrotourism
Since its beginnings, Quinta da Saraiva has been a thriving agricultural estate, covering nearly 5,000 square meters. Nowadays, we’ve transformed our farming practices to organic and biological to preserve our land and ensure healthy produce. Across the property, we grow and harvest bananas, grapes, tomatoes, figs and a wide variety of other fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
Our Seasonal Produce
At Quinta da Saraiva, we take pride in cultivating a diverse selection of fruits, vegetables, and aromatic herbs right here on our land. Our gardens are tended with care, following the natural rhythms of Madeira’s fertile soil and mild climate.
Fruits: Papaya, Mango, Guava, Grapes, Loquat, Figs, Banana, Strawberries,Surinam Cherry and Passion Fruit
Vegetables: Lettuce, Tomato, Beetroot, Leek, and Bell Pepper
Aromatic Herbs: Mint, Lemongrass, and Oregano
Each product is seasonally harvested, meaning availability may vary throughout the year depending on the growing cycle and weather conditions. This ensures that everything we serve or share with our guests is fresh, natural, and full of authentic Madeiran flavor.
Bananas
At Quinta da Saraiva, we proudly cultivate biological certified bananas across our 2,000-square-meter plantation. Bananas have flourished in Madeira since the 16th century, with the island’s favorites being “Dwarf Cavendish,” “Robusta,” “Grand Naine – Israel,” and “Gal.” Did you know that bananas are one of Madeira’s biggest exports? Madeira’s total banana cultivation covers around 850 hectares, and you will find various plantations all around the island.
Following local regulations, we classify our bananas into three quality categories: 1st, 2nd, and the highly prized “Extra” category, offering the finest fruits from our estate.
Grapes
For over a century, we have been cultivating and harvesting traditional Madeiran wine grapes, known as Tinta Negra or Negra Mole. Our vineyards span 1,000 square meters and use the parreira system, where grapes and vines hang from tall wooden or metal structures, never touching the ground.
The grapes from Quinta da Saraiva are harvested and sold to the main buyer of grapes in Madeira, which then are partly used to make our own Madeira wine.
The wine is then aged in our cellars and sold under the name José Dinis at Bar Anália. Try our Madeira wine at check in, and purchase your bottle to take home at reception.
Our Animals
Our Quinta has homed goats for over 15 years, ever since grandfather José Rodrigues Diniz (Avô) built the original pen. We have since expanded it to give the goats more sunlight and space to roam. Our farm also includes a chicken coop with numerous hens, who lay eggs daily. Not to be forgotten, our cat Mel is the star of our social media and adored by guests, effortlessly charming everyone who meets her. You will possibly find her sunlounging by the pool, feel free to give her some love.
